On August 6, 2024, former Santa Clara Rowing Coach, Jay Howard Finney, passed away after a long, hard fought 10-year battle with cancer. Jay was an exceptional coach with a contagious energy, enthusiasm, and ability to communicate the art of the sport. He served as head coach for two years and came back to assist future head Coaches Jay Farwell and Tony Barcia. Jay was a force of nature, always at-the-ready to lend a helping hand or provide advice on the finer technical and/or training aspects of rowing. He was many things to many people: a coach, a friend, a colleague, a brother, husband, father, son but most of all he was a wonderful human-being.
Jay’s legacy at Santa Clara will continue as the current men’s team is dedicating their upcoming spring season to Jay and his enduring contributions to the Santa Clara Rowing Program. As a part of this legacy, the men’s team will honor Coach Finney by placing his name on the newly ordered heavyweight 8 from Empacher which will arrive prior to the commencement of the upcoming racing season. Your support and contribution to the expense of this shell is welcomed and appreciated. Please see the link below to make a formal donation on behalf and in memory of Coach Finney.
